The Maryland Board of Physicians is soliciting nominations for four physicians to fill Board member positions that will become vacant as of June 30, 2012. Two of the consumer member seats on the Board will also become vacant on that date.  

Physician nominees will be accepted from Maryland physician organizations representing at least 25 licensed physicians in the State. These nominations should be on the organization’s letterhead and signed by the administrator of the organization. In addition, nominations will be accepted from individual Maryland licensed physicians who submit a valid petition signed by 25 Maryland licensed physicians. The petition should contain the candidate’s name, address, license number, and signature; and the names, license numbers and signatures of the signers of the petition. 

Nominations and petitions must include a completed biographical information form and resume or curriculum vitae of the nominee. The form may be downloaded from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene website:   Please forward all nominations and petitions to the Secretary of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene at 201 West Preston Street, Baltimore, MD 21201, Attention Anna Lieberman, Administrator, Appointments and Executive Nominations by April 20,2012. The Department is committed to obtaining increased gender, geographical and minority representation on each of the Boards, Commissions and Task Forces. 

Valid nominations and petitions will be forwarded to Governor Martin O’Malley. The Governor will appoint the new physician Board members from the nominations.

  • Each member serves on at least one of the following Board Committees
  • Investigative Review Panel- Meets 2nd Wednesday, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.
  • Case Resolution Conference- Meets 1st Wednesday, 10:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m.
  • Licensure/Practice of Medicine Committee- Meets 3rd Thursday, 4:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m.
  • Physician Assistant Advisory Committee- Meets 1st Wednesday, 4:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m.
  • Radiation Therapy, Radiography, Nuclear Medicine Technologist, and Radiologist Assistance Advisory Committee
  • Technology Advisory Committee- Meets 3rd Wednesday of every other month 4:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m.
  • Respiratory Care Professional Standards Committee- Meets 2nd Thursday of month 2-6 times per year, at  10:00a.m.
  •  Polysomnography Professional Standards Committee ( 4th Thursday, bi-monthly, 4:00 p.m.)
  • Athletic Trainer Advisory Committee- Meets 2nd Tuesday, 10:00 a.m.   


The Board of Physicians is a state agency, which licenses, regulates, and disciplines physicians and allied health practitioners. All complaints determined to be within the jurisdiction of the Board are investigated. Under law, the Board refers certain complaints involving standard of care to a nonprofit entity for peer review. Investigations may involve a review of the physician’s office, medical records and a personal interview with the physician to evaluate the practice in question. During hearings held by the Board, both parties are entitled to have legal counsel present. The Board will determine the disciplinary measures to be taken. Complaints may be filed by anyone: patients, other physicians, and government or private agencies.   

OTHER DUTIES OF MEMBERS: (Types of Committees, Exams, etc)

Board members may be called upon to serve on Statewide Committees as stated above.  


Board members are compensated for travel and are provided lunch for attendance at monthly Board meetings. The Board Chairman is compensated for travel and receives $300 per diem.  Board members are compensated for travel and receive $250 per diem for attendance at meeting.
