DHMH Press Releases : Maryland WIC is Open for Business

MARYLAND WIC IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS

BALTIMORE (October 4, 2013) -- The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene today reminded Marylanders that, despite the federal government shutdown, the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is continuing operations. All Maryland WIC clinics are open for business, and all authorized Maryland WIC vendors are accepting and honoring WIC checks.

DHMH will continue to monitor the federal budget situation, and will immediately post any change to the Maryland WIC status. The Department will continue to work with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Governor O’Malley’s office to minimize service disruptions

The Maryland WIC Program provides nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and connections to other public health services, as well as essential supplemental foods to pregnant and postpartum women, infants and children. Approximately 145,000 Marylanders participate and receive WIC benefits every month.

For additional information about WIC, including how to apply, visit http://phpa.dhmh.maryland.gov/wic/SitePages/Home.aspx. If the program’s status changes, updates will be posted here: http://dhmh.maryland.gov/SitePages/Federal%20Budget%20Situation.aspx
